Growing Export Activity in Tennessee

Export activity continues to show signs of strength throughout the U.S., and Middle Tennessee is no exception.

The Chamber’s International Business Council (IBC) is a network of international business leaders focused on expanding Middle Tennessee’s global footprint through recruiting foreign direct investments; becoming the information source for international business; and connecting global companies to critical resources. As exports grow and companies expand into overseas markets, the local economy sees positive effects through expansions and job creation.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Tennessee is the 14th-largest exporter in the nation, with 2011 exports totaling $29.97 billion. This represents an increase of more than 15 percent from 2010, and more than 46 percent from 2009. Tennessee’s largest export market is Canada, with $8.3 billion in Tennessee goods exported there in 2011. Our other large export markets are Mexico, China and Japan.

Recently, Nashville was ranked on Global Trade magazine's list of the top 50 U.S. cities for global trade. Our region's target business sectors -- health care, music & entertainment, advanced manufacturing, corporate operations and supply chain management -- all have a strong presence in the worldwide economy, and the IBC is continually working to capitalize on our strong potential for international trade and investment.
