In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last week to uphold the constitutionality of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — Obamacare to its critics — there’s been no shortage of “silver linings” discussed by pundits of every stripe.
Most obviously, President Barack Obama and the Democrats scored what appears to be a major policy and political victory. Republicans, meanwhile, are hoping for a resurgence of tea party activism to help them win in November — plus, they see future possibilities to rein in federal power through a reworking of the commerce clause in Supreme Court cases to come.
While it’s hard to avoid stepping into the political muck when discussing so much as a routine doctor’s visit in this hyper-charged, hyper-partisan era we find ourselves in these days, let me offer yet another silver lining related to the ruling.
