Whether you are importing or exporting, it is important to determine the tariff rate for your products. If you do not know your Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) number, you must determine that first.
Determining your HTS Number
If you do not know the HTS number for your goods, call the Bureau of Census at (301) 457-3041 or (301) 457-1084.
Imports into the United States
To determine a tariff rate for goods entering the U.S., contact the U.S. Customs office at the port of entry into the U.S. or call the Nashville U.S. Customs District Port Office at (615) 736-5861. A Customs official will be able to tell you the tariff rate for a specific HTS number. Customs has its own HTS lookup web site searchable by keyword at http://www.ustic.gov/taffairs.htm.
Exports from the United States
To determine the tariff/duty rate on a product being exported from the U.S., contact the regional desk officers at the U.S. Department of Commerce for the country or region that good is being imported into. They will be able to tell you the tariff rates for specific HTS numbers for that country. Desk Officers are the source of information on trade potential for U.S. products in specific countries, specific market information, and much more.
