Austin Peay State University
In 1925 the Tennessee State legislature passed "An Act to establish and maintain a Uniform System of Public Education." This general education bill coincided with the citizens of Clarksville, TN, deciding that their community needed to house a state normal school. The city's previous university, Southwestern Presbyterian University, a Clarksville landmark since 1875, moved to Memphis in 1925. The site of Southwestern Presbyterian had a long history of being used for educational institutions. This persistent parade of academies and colleges had become a significant point of pride in the community. In 1927 a bill to create a normal school on the site was introduced in both Tennessee House and the Senate.
In the seventy years of its existence, APSU has grown from a normal school to a state college and finally a state university. Today Austin Peay State University's academic goals are just as clear as they have always been. Austin Peay is the liberal arts college for the entire Tennessee Board of Regents system. It also is still known for its teacher education program, which is one of the most distinguished in the country. Other professional programs include the College of Business and the College of Nursing. The Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell is another growing part of the school's academic tradition.
