Nashville Chamber announces recipients of 2005 HR Excellence Awards
For Immediate Release
May 16, 2005

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Three Nashville-area companies have been selected as the best of the best in the field of human resources by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and Middle Tennessee Society of Human Resource Management (MT-SHRM).

Nashville-based Education Networks of America (ENA), a network management solutions provider serving school systems and governmental agencies, has been named the sole overall 2005 HR Excellence Awards winner. Dialysis services company Renal Care Group, also based in Nashville, and State Farm Insurance Companies of Murfreesboro will each receive a Facet of Excellence Award for their exceptional performance in certain HR categories -- Renal Care Group for strategy and State Farm for employee well-being, satisfaction, loyalty and commitment.

Established to recognize and foster human resource excellence among Middle Tennessee companies, the HR Excellence Awards are based on the scrupulous HR principles of the Malcom Baldrige National Quality Program. Businesses are invited to self-nominate for the honor each year and are evaluated on proficiency in five areas: strategy; management practices; employee education, training and development; performance measurement; and employee well-being, satisfaction, loyalty and commitment.

“Companies across the nation are beginning to focus on the importance of their people and the link back to overall corporate success,” said Tim Hess, vice president of human resources for Saint Thomas Health Services and HR Excellence committee member. “The HR Excellence Awards process recognizes area companies who are leading this trend.”

A commitment to employee development and effective, two-way communications between employee and management are hallmarks of ENA’s success in the 2005 HR Excellence Award program. Employees actively work to meet personal and company goals through detailed individual and team plans. The company also demonstrated how its responsiveness to employee concerns had a direct impact on productivity.

Carolyn Kitts, director of human resources for Gresham Smith and Partners and HR Excellence committee member, said, “This year’s winners have demonstrated the ability to connect employee satisfaction and productivity directly to the company’s success using innovative processes and initiatives.”

With the goal of helping Middle Tennessee companies improve their HR departments through peer-learning, ENA, Renal Care Group and State Farm Insurance will share their best HR practices with all interested companies during a workshop in October. The date and location have yet to be determined.

The fourth annual luncheon presentation of the HR Excellence Awards will be held Tuesday, June 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nashville Downtown Hilton. Tractor Supply Company Chairman Joe Scarlett will serve as keynote speaker. Members of the Nashville Area Chamber or MT-SHRM can attend for $35. The cost is $70 for non-members. Sponsors of the HR Excellence Award program are King & Ballow, Lee Hecht Harrison, VIPGift.com and The City Paper.
