Leadership Study Mission participants set to visit Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C.
For Immediate Release
May 4, 2007
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nearly 150 local business and community leaders will get a firsthand look at community practices when the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) offer a joint Leadership Study Mission to Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C., from Sunday morning, May 6, to Tuesday evening, May 8.
The Leadership Study Mission represents a combination of the Chamber's annual InterCity Visit and the CVB's annual tourism study mission. Participants are set to visit the Baltimore/D.C. area to gain a greater understanding of a variety of timely issues and projects.
"Many of the topics on the visit's agenda are items that we are considering in the Nashville area," said Tim DuBois, chair-elect of the CVB Board of Directors and visit co-leader. "It is very helpful to go to another city and observe firsthand the successful implementation of various community projects."
Among the highlights and topics on the Mission's agenda:
A visit to the Washington, D.C. Convention Center for a panel with hospitality and neighborhood leaders;
A look at Baltimore's and D.C.'s emphasis on branding and marketing to attract visitors, businesses and residents;
Discussions with Washington museum leadership about the creation of a museum for today's visitors; in addition, a session at Baltimore's newly opened Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture;
The role of higher education in a community with a focus on economic development;
Community support for sports venues and entities; and
A look at Baltimore's harbor development and D.C.'s Anacostia River development.
"There is a real value in making these trips to see what other cities are doing," said Ron Samuels, vice chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and visit co-leader. "When we take into account the best practice of other cities and incorporate them into the Nashville area, these visits become a community development tool. This is because tangible results are impacted and produced, such as the development of the downtown Nashville Public Library and the Schermerhorn Symphony Center."
The Leadership Study Mission will feature breakout sessions in Washington, D.C. on topics such as branding, convention centers, museums, waterfront development, economic development and education. In Baltimore, participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about arts promotion, transportation, public policy, green buildings and workforce development through a series of table topic discussions and breakout sessions.
Mission sponsors are Regions Bank; Tower Investments; Bass, Berry & Sims; Boult, Cummings, Conners & Berry; GroupXcel; SunTrust Bank; Turner Universal Construction Co.; and Zycron, Inc.
