“We are grateful for getting involved when we did as it is obvious that Nashville and Tennessee will become a center of excellence for future businesses.”

Who is Harmony Medical Solutions and what should we know about you?

Harmony Medical Solutions was established in 2006 serving the medical industry as a supplier of diagnostic imaging systems and spare parts primarily overseas. In 2014, the company halted operations after the passing of Matthew Charkhkar, founder and president.

In 2016, Shirin Charkhkar, wife and co-owner of Harmony Medical Solutions took on the role as sole proprietor and later that year re-established the company as an LLC. In January 2017, Ed Petrovskis joined the company and became 49% owner with Ms. Charkhkar holding 51% shares. In September of 2017, the company relocated to a 20,000 square ft. facility at 408 Oak Bluff Lane, Goodlettsville.

The first objective for our newly organized company was to establish a support network through the available local government agencies. By reaching out to the Small Business Development Center (Nashville) we were introduced to several key leaders who helped direct us to the many local resources available for small businesses. The SBDC became a valuable contact for the support needed to grow the business, especially internationally. In Q1 of 2020 HarmonyMedical Solutions became SAM registered with the government enabling us to bid on government contracts.

What is unique about your business that makes you stand out?

Harmony Medical Solutions is divided into two main business units. The first addressed afore mentioned sale of diagnostic imaging equipment and spare parts. This type of business is world-wide and in the Nashville area there are many companies that compete in this space.

The second business unit fabricates a unique product called MedBays. By utilizing a standard shipping container, these containers are converted into turn-key medical facilities that can support variety of modalities and applications such as CT, X-Ray, Dental, Mammography, Ultrasound, clinical examination rooms and triage. Because they are self-contained and modular, they can be placed on site as either singular or multiple building block configurations. The initial intent for MedBays was to deploy these to impoverished countries throughout Africa, Middle East, and Central America. As the Pandemic slowed down our progress internationally, we are now we are seeing opportunities emerge domestically, especially for COVID treatment.

What’s your biggest goal for your company in this year?

Our main goal is to bring our MedBays product to the forefront of our business through an aggressive marketing campaign. We hope to get the support through our local chamber of commerce and continued support from the SBDC. We will also complete the SBA process to become established as an EDWOSB so that we can further enhance our position in government bids.

What’s the best thing about doing business in Middle Tennessee?

Location is ideal for constructing our containers as we are at the hub of many large industrial cities that supply our raw materials. Commercial properties are still relatively inexpensive, but this advantage will soon fade as many large companies are trending to relocate here. Tennessee is also a rite-to-work state so no one can be forced to join a labor union. No state taxes are appealing for those looking to relocate here.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your Chamber membership?

Having recently joined the Chamber, we have not fully utilized the many resources available. Going forward, we realize that the Chamber is needed to grow our business.

What best business practices have you learned from 2020 and what did you do to be creative to remain in business?

The year of the Pandemic has forced hospitals to push out the purchase of new equipment. This in turn has created a ripple effect in our market whereby pre-owned systems became in short supply. In Q1, we anticipated a classic supply and demand scenario and utilize the funding available through our banks and short-term loans to buy systems before the price increases.

With a good supply of inventory going into Q2, we were able to overcome a potentially devastating year resulting in a record 3rd and 4th quarter. We also devoted much of our time in Q1 to become SAM registered with the government. Soon after becoming registered we were awarded a contract to supply NOAA with one of our MedBays containers which will be delivered in Q1 of 2021.

What’s your best piece of advice for other business owners?

Take the opportunity to look into the many resources offered by your local chamber of commerce and Small Business Development Center in your area. The Nashville branch has been particularly helpful, and we are grateful for getting involved when we did as it is obvious that Nashville and Tennessee will become a center of excellence for future businesses.

How do you stay involved in the community?

We continue to stay engaged with the local resources such as SBDC, and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.
