Position Description / Responsibilities
The Tennessee Department of General Services is responsible for providing goods and services to the State government of Tennessee. Its primary customers are other State departments and agencies. It also serves vendors wishing to do business with the State, and citizens and organizations interested in purchasing surplus State and federal property. The Department’s services include centralized procurement for State departments; management of the State’s real estate assets; motor vehicle and equipment management; printing, media, and photographic services; postal services; warehousing and distribution; State employee parking, badging, and shuttle services; and assistance to small businesses and businesses owned by minorities, women, and veterans. This position assists the Department's General Counsel in providing legal counsel to Department's officials and employees on a broad range of matters and issues. The position is located in downtown Nashville and the monthly starting salary is $5,523 - $6,351 (determined on experience). Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Responds to legal questions from other state agencies and members of the general public
Provides timely legal review and guidance in Department's personnel matters including disciplinary matters, ADA, FMLA and FLSA issues and oversees personnel-related investigations
Assists with RIF-related and litigation matters, including fact finding, responding to discovery requests, legal research, witness preparation and appearance in contested matters
Reviews, drafts and analyzes legislation
Responds to Public Record Act requests
Conducts training programs for Department officials and employees
Manages the Department's motor vehicle damage claims (including collection) and personal injury on State property claims process; manages the Department's records management program
Assists the General Counsel in all stages of the rulemaking process
Completion of a law degree from an accredited college or university, possession of license to practice law in the State of Tennessee
Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills; and strong negotiating skills
Intellectual Horsepower, Political savvy, Integrity; and strong problem solving skills.
