Corporate Sustainability Manager (Full-Time)
URBAN GREEN LAB
Urban Green Lab’s mission is simple: We teach communities how to live sustainable, healthy lives. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 and based in Nashville, we envision a world where everyone understands the basics of sustainable living, with a focus on energy, material, and food waste in our classrooms, households, and workplaces – places where culture begins. Together with our frontline partners, we facilitate dialogue, advance curricula, and build measurable life skills that empower, save money, protect health, inspire responsibility, and conserve our incredible earth for generations to come.
SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
The Corporate Sustainability Manager is responsible for spearheading Urban Green Lab’s new Corporate Sustainability Roundtable as well as helping manage fundraising for the organization, especially around corporate, foundational, and individual giving. Supervised by the Executive Director, the Manager ensures smooth implementation of the Roundtable, including facilitating meetings, mobilizing member companies, connecting resources, and ensuring the initiative aligns with Urban Green Lab objectives. The position is full-time and requires occasional travel throughout the city. Some evening/weekend duties required.
THE CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY ROUNDTABLE
A partnership between Urban Green Lab, Nissan North America, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Piedmont Natural Gas, the Corporate Sustainability Roundtable brings together corporate green teams and sustainability stewards representing businesses throughout Nashville to learn, network, foster skills, and exchange best practices for making sustainable workplace behaviors a priority. Through small group exercises, tours and presentations by rotating host companies, interaction with resident experts, and aligning measures, members collectively explore how to reduce their overall environmental footprint.
Percentages of effort may evolve with time.
1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT (70%)
- Manage all aspects of the Corporate Sustainability Roundtable in partnership with the Roundtable’s founding partners, ensuring deliverables are met on time and with excellence.
- Orchestrate and strengthen processes and logistics, including planning and leading founder and monthly membership meetings (six per year), scheduling, task management, filing, etc.
- Present and educate key stakeholders about the program, including corporations (large and small businesses, facilities staff, vendors, etc.), donors, the media, and the general public.
- Foster meaningful relationships with current and prospective member companies, researching their interests and green capacities, and connecting them to resources.
- Collect, analyse, synthesize, and report on core impact measures, including around green team advancement, employee education, and waste diversion (energy, water, food, etc.).
- Work closely with a team of peripheral advisors, including resident experts and consultants, the Chamber of Commerce, State and Metro representatives, and academic affiliates.
- Coordinate the Roundtable’s annual Sustainable Workplace Awards, including soliciting nominations, the selection process, and planning and executing the event.
FUNDRAISING STRATEGY & IMPLEMENTATION (20%)
- Assist fundraising strategy for the organization, with a focus on corporate, foundation, and individual giving, and assist Executive Director with government grants as necessary.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, staff, and the Board of Directors’ Finance and Fundraising Committees to set, analyze, and report on annual goals and processes.
- Help lead reporting and drawdowns for all contributions specifically related to the Roundtable, following requirements carefully and corresponding with donors year-round.
- Research and catalogue opportunities, exploring new donors, researching preferences and application details, and joining the Executive Director in introductory donor meetings.
GENERAL SUPPORT (10%)
- Support other core functions and educational programs of Urban Green Lab as needed, including annual strategic planning and budgeting, outreach, special events, and operations.
- Address general administrative and other programmatic tasks as necessary. Participate in regular staff and occasional Board meetings, help grow systems, and support the team.
SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary for this position starts at $50,000 with opportunity for growth dependent on performance and development of the program. Benefits include group Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), retirement (simple IRA), a monthly communications stipend, 20 PTO (paid time off) days in addition to seven annual holidays, and free home composting service by Compost Nashville. A 90-day review period is required, including annual performance reviews.
Based in an office setting, the Corporate Sustainability Manager will meet with partners outside the office on a regular basis (about half time). A flexible work schedule is expected. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities.
The candidate will ideally possess the following attributes and professional qualifications:

- Five to seven years of relevant experience (masters in applicable subject matter preferred)
- Experience managing projects with multiple stakeholders, ideally related to professional training
- Understanding of corporate workplace challenges, including leadership & facilities engagement
- Fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations experience, including reporting on outcomes
- Partnership facilitation experience a must, especially mobilizing diverse community audiences
- Understanding of environment, sustainability, health and well-being, or related issues
- Familiarity with nonprofits and grants management (including reporting) a plus
- Clear oral and written communications, and experience with presentation
