Position Description / Responsibilities
The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Adult Education Division, is seeking to hire an English language acquisition and civics education specialist ("education specialist"). The education specialist will provide high-quality professional development to English language and civics providers across the State in areas of curriculum development and instructional delivery. They will collaborate with local providers to identify areas of need in service delivery and program design with the intent to remove barriers to students and improve the quality of service. They will also focus on implementing job readiness and training opportunities for English language learners.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong background working with individuals seeking English-as-a-second-language and civics services, and will be experienced in teaching and leadership roles. They will have excellent communication skills and be comfortable working closely with groups of instructors and program leaders, training them on best practices and helping them implement new initiatives. They will also be able to develop and blend curriculum to meet the needs of the labor market.
Establish instructional standards for English language acquisition and civics instructors and ensure that standards are implemented and practiced in the classroom
Collaborate with the director of professional development to secure and provide development opportunities for staff
Identify best practices concerning English language acquisition and civics program design and service delivery, and collaborate with local programs to design and implement high-quality services.
Assist local programs in improving student enrollment and engagement
Research and create instructional resources for instructors
Assist with monitoring local English language acquisition and civics programs for compliance with state and federal requirements
Assist local programs in identifying resources for students that connect them to their communities, immigration services, and employment and postsecondary opportunities.

Travel: 10% - 25% (primarily in-state)
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
1-3 years’ experience as an ESL instructor
1-2 years’ experience leading training opportunities in ESL programs
Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in ESL, education, or related field
1-2 years instructing civics courses
