Overview
Salary: $145,000 annually
The State Traffic Design Director is TDOT’s mobility strategist and networker: someone who spends much of their time making decisions, building relationships, and providing their expertise. They are an intelligent, charismatic leader who drives the Department toward Tennessee’s vision for traffic safety and mobility. The State Traffic Design Director is an exceptional influencer and strategic communicator with people at all levels throughout TDOT, as well as with external partners such as vendors, R&D partners, the legislature, and transportation professionals at federal, state, regional, and local levels. Experienced, well-read, and possessing a deep knowledge of up-to-date traffic engineering principles and practices, they are known nationally within the industry as a strategic thinker and thought leader on the future of mobility. They generate excitement among people about moving toward a shared vision to increase safety and reduce congestion. In every interaction, the Director meets people where they are and draws them toward TDOT’s vision.
Job Responsibilities
- Manages the overall leadership and direction for TDOT’s statewide Traffic Design disciplines
- Monitors state and federal legislation that affects TDOT Traffic Design processes
- Provides leadership and policy-level direction for regional traffic design leads in a matrix structure
- Mentors staff in the areas of leadership, professional conduct, emotional intelligence, and teamwork
- Leads efforts to develop performance metrics around improving safety and primary traffic design tenants of scope, schedule, budget, and quality
- Leads the Division in exploration and implementation of emerging technologies that improve efficiency, effectiveness, reliability, and safety of TDOT’s transportation network
- Builds relationships between TDOT and local agencies to resolve questions about engineering and roadway safety
- Maintains and provides guidance for TDOT Traffic Design policies, manuals, and procedures
- Creates a culture of accomplishment by communicating expectations, assisting employees in establishing measurable goals, providing timely feedback, and training, ensuring the necessary tools required for the employee to achieve their goals are available, and celebrating the achievement of goals with the employee

Position Requirements
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- 10 years of demonstrated competency in traffic engineering including at least 2 years of management experience and 2 years supervising staff.
- Licensed PE in Civil Engineering
- Certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) preferred.
